In its 30 years of operations in Estonia, Paulig has grown internationally into one of the considerable exporters in Estonia, by selling 80% of its products to foreign markets. In June, Paulig will celebrate its years of operation in Estonia and will head to the future in line with the company's ambition of being one of the fastest growing food and beverage companies in Europe and a sustainable frontrunner in the industry. “I am glad to say that Paulig continues to plan to operate, grow and invest in Estonia now and in the future. For us, Estonia has been an important strategic centre for our growth and will remain so also in the future”, says Rolf Ladau, CEO of Paulig.

Developing the local food and coffee culture together with partners 

In 2000, Paulig's coffee production moved from Saue to Finland, and the factory focused on the wider production of Santa Maria spices. Paulig has been an important trendsetter and educator of coffee, spices, BBQ and world cuisines in Estonia and in the Baltics. "Even now, we work closely on a daily basis with our partners and clients to meet the growing expectations of our consumers and customers. We can clearly see the trend of the younger generation calling for more plant-based options, quick grab-and-go snacks and cold coffee drinks. At the same time, as Estonians are eager travellers, we have also seen an increase in interest for spicy foods and other world cuisines", says Marta Piigli, Paulig’s Commercial Director for Out of Home in the Baltics.

For sustainable growth 

Since Paulig's beginning in 1876, the company has laid its foundation on quality, innovation and sustainability. Paulig has set itself the ambitious goal of being a sustainability frontrunner in the food and beverage industry. That also in the Saue production, which is planned to be certified as a carbon-neutral factory building already during the course of this year. 

"I am happy that Paulig’s Saue factory has continued to develop and expand over the three decades here in Estonia. We are producing spices, spice mixes and marinades to 30 different countries across Europe and are therefore one of the considerable exporters in Estonia. We produce more than 600 different products from 250 different raw materials, annual production volume is close to 50,000,000 pieces. Many of our employees are working with us since the beginning. I believe it is due to constant innovation, development and secure workplace that have kept many people here at Paulig working motivated," says Saue factory manager Mati Kirspuu

Beginning of 90s as a risky endeavour  

On 1 June 1993, Paulig opened its coffee and spice factory in Saue, Estonia. It was considered as one of the largest foreign investments in Estonia at the time. Paulig had already in the beginning of 1940s a warehouse and sales office in Rataskaevu Street in Tallinn, which needed to close in 1943 due to World War II. The first café, which offered Paulig coffee in Tallinn was café Kulta, the most representative café back then in the Baltics. 

Paulig's return to Estonia at the beginning of the 90's, was not only about expanding the company, but establishing and fostering relationships with local businesses, non-profit organisations and other food and coffee culture promoters. Paulig is one of the founding members of the Estonian Food Association, major sponsor of the Estonian Song Festivals, supporting the Olympic movement, working closely with local communities and the Saue municipality, Estonian Chefs' Association, SOS Children's Village, Estonian Food Bank and many others.
