18.6.2021 Press release
The technology group Wärtsilä and Paulig, two of Finland’s leading companies, are cooperating in a demonstration of how modern technology can promote sustainability – even in the brewing of a cup of coffee. Paulig is a family-owned international food and beverage company known for its strong portfolio of coffee brands. In the Finnish pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai, the collaborative partnership between the two companies will show how a cup of coffee can be brewed using Power-to-X technology. The Power-to-X demonstration unit takes CO₂ from the indoor air and converts it in a biomethanation process into synthetic methane, which then powers the coffee machine. The demo unit thus exemplifies how future fuels can be part of a 100 percent renewable energy future.

“Brewing coffee in a carbon-neutral way, as we are doing at the Expo 2020 Dubai, is just one way of increasing awareness of the fact that we already have technologies in place that can deliver future fuels out of thin air. Enjoying a tasty coffee is a familiar habit and precious moment for most of us and having it “decarbonised” makes the technology experience tangible and showcases the endless possibilities in areas to decarbonise. In the global energy sector, Wärtsilä is leading the transition to a 100 percent renewables future, while for maritime customers, we are actively developing future low or zero carbon fuels for marine engines,” commented Atte Palomäki, Executive Vice President, Communications, Branding & Marketing, Wärtsilä Corporation.

“We have very ambitious climate targets and this cooperation with Wärtsilä is contributing to our ambition to become a sustainable frontrunner in the food & beverage industry. Our coffee roastery in Finland is among the first in the world to be awarded carbon-neutral certification, and all our coffee beans come from verified sustainable sources. We welcome this opportunity to collaborate with a like-minded technology leader to enhance our understanding of new solutions and future technologies which will help reduce emissions,” said Kaisa Lipponen, Senior Vice President, Communications & Sustainability, Paulig.

Both Wärtsilä and Paulig are committed to promoting sustainability, and both employ long-term sustainable thinking and goals within their corporate strategies. In its Power-to-X technology development, Wärtsilä has strategic cooperation agreements with Soletair Power and Q Power, two innovative start-up companies with expertise in this field.

The Expo 2020 Dubai will run from October 2021 to the end of March 2022. Wärtsilä is partnering with Business Finland and a number of different Finnish companies at the event. The objective of the World Expo is to bring brilliant minds and innovative companies together for a greater good. Wärtsilä is inviting individuals and organisations to imagine a new kind of world, a more sustainable future, and to be an active part of the change they would like to see in the world.
